For some odd reason, I felt like rooting my Nexus One at around midnight last night. Thankfully I had my friend Doug who was kind enough to point me in the right direction in a matter of about 30 mins via IM..during which I asked a him ‘loads’ of n00b questions …. :-O
Started off by performing the bootloader unlock. My N1 was first re-started to show:

I then ran the following via the Terminal on my MacBook Pro. Of course, I had previously enabled ‘USB Debugging’ on the N1.
1 2 3 4 | $ ./fastboot-mac oem unlock ... INFOErasing userdata... ERROR: usb_read failed with status e00002ed FAILED (status read failed (No such file or directory)) |
This gave me the following screen:

Bootloader unlocked! Woohoo, I just voided the warranty. Well past the point of ‘no return’, literally LOL.

1 2 3 | $ sudo ./install-superboot-mac.sh sending 'boot' (2164 KB)... OKAY writing 'boot'... OKAY |
…and we have root!

1 2 | $ ./fastboot-mac devices HT9CXXXXXXXX fastboot |
1 2 3 | $ ./fastboot-mac flash recovery recovery-RA-nexus-v1.7.0.img sending 'recovery' (3948 KB)... OKAY writing 'recovery'... OKAY |

Performed a Factory Reset/Wipe (this clears DATA and CACHE). Also the Dalvik VM’s cache was wiped.

…and we’re done! Now simply ‘reboot’ your handset via the Amon_Ra interface.
Now why did I go through all of this, and the obvious risk of (i) completely bricking my Nexus One and (ii) voiding my warranty? Simple ~ Android Scripting Environment (ASE) and WiFi/HSDPA tethering, where the latter transforms the Nexus One into an awesome “MiFI” Hot Spot!
I watched a couple clips on YouTube for about an hour and found I was doing around 800 kbps downstream. The connection was very responsive and pages loaded quite quickly; not the fastest HSDPA connection though but I believe it’s because I have gone over my quota of 1 GB transfers for this month 8)

For the past couple years I lived in the UK, reading in BEng (Hons) Electronic and Computer Engineering at The University of Leeds and MSc (Dist) Mechatronics at King's College London.
My interests and hobbies include writing with Fountain Pens on various ink and paper, Swiss and German wristwatches, authoring articles in Mathematics, Physics, and Engineering, and Gundam modeling.
I have been following much Anime over the years as well as TV Shows with the likes of 24, Smallville, Dexter, and NCIS becoming favourites.
